Week 34 Tokyo Mission

Marjorie and her kids! Converts from Koiwa! :) I love them so much.

I got this picture from sister Frank's at MLC- Kouno San's baptism from a while ago! :)

Hamburgers for activity

Our church! 5 stories!! Never mind the bill board... Or the truck... Haha

Dear family,

Merry almost Christmas!!! :D I heard that the tree isn't quite up
yet... I'm thinking that should happen soon because Christmas is
coming soon!! I'm so excited! Sister Morley and I have been singing
Christmas hymns ever since I came here to Matsudo. There are lots of
pretty lights and I'm beginning to feel the Christmas Spirit strong
already. I love Christmas so much! I hope you are all listening to
Christmas Music and making Christmas treats, because that always helps
me to be excited for Christmas.

I've been thinking a lot lately about what kind of Christmas I want
this year to be like. As a mission, we want to see one baptism for
each companionship by the end of December to bring in the 'whiteness'
and snow for Christmas. Sister Takahashi and I have been doing lot of
planning for our zone meeting, which is tomorrow. We have really hard
working Zone leaders and so we think that this zone meeting will be
really amazing! We have a zone theme of "Give the Gift." During this
Christmas season, we want to give a gift to Jesus Christ. After Jesus
Christ was born, there were 3 wise men who came looking for Jesus
Christ. When they found him, they each have Him a special gift. Each
gift was different, but I imagine the wise men all felt a similar
feeling as they saw the young Christ child. As missionaries, what we
give to the Lord will be different for everyone, but we all want to
promise to do something to be more consecrated as missionaries. We are
all planning to change something about ourselves as a gift to Christ
for Christmas. We feel really strongly that if we all commit to this
one thing, each individually, that we will become more sanctified and
be able to see one baptism/companionship before the end of December.
So exciting! :)
Anyway, I just wanted to encourage you all to think about what
Christmas really means for you, and to think about something you would
give to Jesus Christ if you had been there in the stable when he was
born. This has also helped me to be so excited about Christmas! :D

Alright, so I've had a way busy week! I don't think I've ever been so
busy in my life. It's a good thing though. We taught a lot of lessons
this week, and were able to pick up a few new investigators! So many
miracles!
On Wednesday, sister Morley and I decided that we wanted to visit 3
member families. We felt it would be good to drop by, share a short
message, and then pray with the families before dendouing in their
areas. When we arrived at the third members house, she wasn't home. It
gave us an opportunity to think about what we should do at that
moment, as the member was not home and our plans had changed. After
saying a prayer to know what we should do, we noticed a young mother
and her son playing at the park about 50 feet away from us. We felt
like we should go and talk with her, and so we did! As we talked with
this woman, (her name was Shimizu San) we learned that she was the
member's we had originally come to visit, best friend! As we talked
with her, she began asking us questions about our church. We just
started to answer her questions when out of nowhere the member friend
came riding by on her bike. She saw us talking with Shimizu San and
stopped to come and see what was happening. I will never forget the
look on this members face as she scrambled over to see us. We were
able to have a lesson together right there in the park. It was such an
amazing miracle! I saw light go off in this members face as she
witnessed her best friend taking interest in the church. This member
bore a powerful testimony of the Savior and of the true meaning of
Christmas. This member really caught fire and it warmed my heart to
see the hope in her eyes as we talked together with her friend. The
member invited Shimizu San to come to the ward Christmas party. It was
a really neat experience.

I feel like there has been a great change in Japan in the short time I
have been here. God is really hastening His work here. Being in the
Matsudo ward has really given me a great perspective on God's
hastening of the work. There are over 100 children in our Matsudo
ward, and they are all coming from strong LDS families, preparing to
be missionaries someday. It's amazing talking with these kids and
hearing about what their parents have taught them their whole lives.
The other day, the Cub Boys and activity day girls invited us to a
lunch that they were hosting. They made us hamburgers and it was
really fun! It was a huge activity-probably 50 of them all together,
plus their leaders. I had the opportunity to talk with all of these
cute little Japanese 8-11 year old boys and girls. Almost every child
I talked to, said opening and without me asking them, that they wanted
to serve missions and teach the gospel to their friends. A couple of
them brought their friends and we were able to meet them and their
families. I am so overwhelmed at the thought of these young people
wanting so greatly to help share the gospel. They love the
missionaries so much. It has been a humbling experience to be in this
Matsudo ward. Everyone is so wonderful. I can't express what I feel,
but I know that I was sent here for a much wiser purpose than I know
now. God is hastening His work here in Japan, and in the whole world!
We are so lucky to live at this time.
We also found a new investigator this past week! We were riding our
bikes to the bishops house, when out of the corner of our eyes we saw
a young mother with two little boys. This woman seemed to be having a
hard time. It looked like she was walking home from getting groceries
and her little boys were running around laughing and playing in the
road on their way home. Her hands were full of grocery bags and I
could tell she was having a hard time keeping her little ones close
beside her. We stopped our bikes and I began talking to the mother
while sister Morley tried to entertain the little 4 and six year old
boys. I usually have a small battle within myself when approaching
people, but when I saw this woman I had no doubt or fear in my mind
about what to do or say. I felt a great urge to stop her. As we began
talking, she recognized us right away! She said she had met the
missionaries previously. I asked her if she believed in God, and she
said that the past sisters also asked her that question...She said
that when they asked, she didn't believe there was a God. She said the
same thing to us, but then after thinking for a little bit, said she
thought maybe there was a God after all. She explained that all of the
sisters she had met were always so happy, so maybe this happiness came
from God? We were able to teach her and she asked us if we would walk
home with her so that we would know where her house was for the next
visit. Her name is Mika and she is very excited to learn about the
gospel! The best part is, she lives really close to the bishop and so
if she ants to come to church she can always catch a ride with them!
There are so many miracles happening here. I'm praying that we will be
able to keep up with the work that needs to be done and the lessons
that need to be taught.

Today, I had a visit from Marjorie and her kids! They came to Matsudo
and we went out and ate dinner together. It was so good to see her! It
was such a tender mercy for me to see her and her kids for Koiwa. I
love them so much.

We have an investigator, Shizuko San, sho is preparing to be baptized
next week! Sister Reeder (previous missionary in Matsudo) and sister
Morley taught her all of last transfer. She is really excited to be
baptized and it has been neat to be able to finish teaching the
lessons to her. Coming to Matsudo has really tested my Japanese
skills. We teach all the time, and because sister Morley is still a
fairly new missionary, You would think that I might feel a lot of the
weight as far as teaching and talking goes, but I don't feel that way
at all! God is really helping us to be able to say everything that we
need to. I feel like my Japanese has come miles in the last week and
all I can say is that the gift of tongues is a real thing. There has
never been a time on my mission when I have tried to day something I
feel impressed to say, and not be able to say it. As we trust in the
Lord, no matter how weak our abilities are, he is able to multiply our
efforts by hundreds and thousands. This is the work of the Lord!

Towards the beginning of the week, Shizuko San was very nervous about
being baptized. She said that she felt like she needed to understand
everything and that she still had a hard time understanding the
scriptures. She felt a lot of anxiety and she told us she didn't know
what to do. As we sat in her living room, thinking about what we might
share with her to help her feel better, this scripture came to my
mind. 1 Nephi 11: 16-17

16 And he said unto me: Knowest thou the condescension of God?

17 And I said unto him: I know that he loveth his children;
nevertheless, I do not know the meaning of all things.

As we read this scripture together, we talked about all of the things
that Shizuko San did know. We asked her if she knew that God lived and
loved her? She reply yes, beginning to get emotional. We asked her if
she felt like God wanted her to be baptized? She said she knew and
felt it very strongly. We were able to testify and help her understand
that we will never know everything or understand everything. Even
prophets in the Book of Mormon, Nephi, did not understand everything.
However, if we really know in our hearts that God lives and loves his
children, then we can trust that everything else is okay because He is
in charge. We may not understand everything, what we should or
shouldn't do in life, but as we turn to the lord and ask Him, because
we know Him and know that through him, we can know all things. I know
that this church is true. This gospel has the power to change people
and help them become happier. Jesus Christ is the savior of the world.
He lives and loves us perfectly. He died for our sins so that we could
return to live with Heavenly Father again someday. We could never do
it by ourselves, even if we exerted every inch of power that we could
muster. We need Jesus Christ. We need his Mercy and His Atonement.
Because he loves us, we are worth something. He sees us as His
greatest treasure, and stands with arms wide open to embrace any man
who will come unto Him. Come unto Christ.
Have a wonderful week!
Love always,

Sister Hubbard xoxo

Week 33 Tokyo Mission

Taken just before leaving Niigata-Ken.

Megumi and Minami Chan went to the temple together again. I'm exited
to see them soon!
This is Iwasaki Shimai :) she made me the skirt.

This is sister Morley! I love her so much already! :)

So, forgot to mention in my letter that I had to take 3 trains by myself in order to come to Matsudo from the Honbu. It was weird not having a companion to travel with Haha. it was definitely an adventure! I arrived safely, and met some way cool people on the train on my way there! :)

Our Sado district and the makise fufu.
This is Eriku- I'm crying really hard in this picture, but she was our main progressing investigator in Sado. Before I left, she promised me with tears in her eyes that she would be baptized. I love her so much. She reminds me so much of Megumi and Minami Chan from Koiwa.

Sister Josefina from the Philippines! Aka, my Sado mother! :)

This skirt is the one Iwasaki Shimai made for me. Isn't is beautiful? I love it.

Dear family,

It's funny how fast the week goes! I feel like I just wrote you all
yesterday, haha. Time goes so fast on missions. I've had an amazing
week! My travel back down to Tokyo was a good one, and I am settling
in to Matsudo really good. Matsudo does feel a lot like Koiwa! I love
it! Yesterday, I met a lot of the ward members and went to church for
the first time in the area. The Matsudo ward is amazing! Everyone is
so 伝導-fired! (Excited about missionary work) Our ward is about the
same size as Koiwa ward, which is around 300 people who come to church
every week. I love it so much! Everyone is so amazing. There are a few
familiar faces in the Matsudo ward as it looks like some people moved
in from Koiwa and Urayasu. (I went to Urayasu for exchanges a couple
of times) The ward has an amazing mission plan and is always doing fun
activities during the week, which makes it really easy to bring people
to see the church. The ward has more kids than adults and there are a
lot of young people! It's wonderful! Also, The church here is the
biggest church I have ever seen in my life! We can see it from our
apartment. It has five floors and when I first saw it, I thought it
was a temple! I will have to send some pictures. :) The Matsudo ward
has an amazing mission plan and is always doing fun activities during
the week, which makes it really easy to bring people to see the
church. I'm excited for our Christmas party coming soon! I think it
will be a really amazing experience.

Well, let me tell you some more about my new companion. Her name is
sister Morley. She is a transfer 4 missionary and is already so
amazing! She has no fear and just talks with people everywhere. I love
it! I've learn so much from her already. :) She comes from a big
family of 12 people- 10 kids, and she is number 7! She is from
Roosevelt, Utah. We've seen a lot of miracles together this past week.
We have two people in this area preparing for baptism and we are
excited to start working with some more people that we found this
week. The Spirit is so abundant here! We had a really cool experience
tonight that would want to share.
There is a 25 year old single adult sister in the ward here who's
preparing to serve a mission. Tonight, we thought it would be fun to
go out and dendou with her for a couple of hours. We began housing
with her and weren't having a lot of success. We did that for close to
an hour and were only able to briefly talk to a few people- not a
whole lot of luck, but then we saw a huge miracle! Haha, literally! We
knocked on this last house door, or rather 'ping ponged' this last
house, and a huge black man answered the door. His accent was very
thick, and so I couldn't understand if he was speaking Japanese or
English. Instinctively, I began speaking Japanese to him. (He was
probably close to 6'6'' and was just full of muscle and looked kinda
scary) He turned to me and said, "what de heck you speak'in Japanese
fo? Sister, do I look Japanese to you?" I was pretty frightened as his
voice was really low and he looked pretty scary and forward...I
quickly said a silent prayer that we would be able to talk with him
and avoid being shot or something.. Haha. We began speaking English...
I told him that we were sent by God to teach him a lesson and that we
knew that God still communicates with his children just as he did in
bible times. We told him that Jesus Christ would be coming to the
earth again soon and that God created a plan for us to become perfect
like Jesus Christ and that through living the gospel that we can find
happiness now, and in the world to come. As we spoke with him, we saw
his countenance change. His eyes changed and he began to tell us about
how he met missionaries once before in Ghana where he lived as a child
and that he remembered them. He suddenly left and shut the door
telling us to wait one second. I felt like we should wait and so we
did. A few minutes later, he came back with an English Book of Mormon
and proceeded to tell us about how he had read it many times and that
he knew it was true. He said that he knew that God still speaks to
people because he had received answers to his prayers about the Book
of Mormon. I was so speechless! Wow!
Such an amazing experience! We are going to refer him to the elders,
and I think that he will be able to be baptized very soon! God works
so many miracles. It's so amazing to see how even years and years
later, God made it possible for this man to meet the missionaries
again. It blew me away! So amazing! Such a miracle! Oh, one more
thing.. This man's name was 'Wonder-' perfect, right? I thought so
too. God is working his wonders with our friend, Wonder! :) This
experience was a huge testimony to me that God really does have
prepared people everywhere and that the field really is white and
ready to harvest. In Alma chapter 13:24 it says:

24 For behold, angels are declaring it unto many at this time in our
land; and this is for the purpose of preparing the hearts of the
children of men to receive his word at the time of his coming in his
glory.

There are amazing things at work in this area! This week, we were able
to talk to over 100 people about the gospel and were able to invite
them all to take the missionary lessons. Granted, one a handful of
them accepted, but God is preparing the lives of all those who did not
accept, just like He prepared us to visit Wonder from Ghana.
I can definitely say I was surprised to hear I would be transferring
to Matsudo, but I know it is the will of the Lord. I'm supposed to
learn and understand something great here in Matsudo. I know this for
sure. On the bus ride back down to the Honbu, I was really nervous to
come to Matsudo, but as soon as I entered Tokyo an warm peaceful
feeling came over my heart and mind. I felt like I was back at home,
and I know it was God letting me know that everything would be okay.
I'm a little nervous for all of the events coming up the in the next
couple of weeks with exchanges and the other things I will have to do,
but this I know for sure. God prepares His people and He is gathering
His children from the four quarters of the earth to prepare for the
second coming of His son, Jesus Christ. I know that just as I have
been sent to different places in my mission for different reasons,
that each one of you is where you are in the world right now because
God needs you to be there. Your influence is incomprehensible! God can
multiply your efforts by hundreds and thousands-even the smallest act
of service for complete strangers can lead to the biggest of miracles!
God is preparing people and is preparing hearts. Someday soon, the
message of the restored gospel will fill the entire world and Jesus
Christ will come down and show himself unto us once again. How great
will that day be when we will bow down at his feet and witness his
great light and glory, and feel of the prints in His hands and in His
feet and each know personally that He is our Savior and Redeemer. I
know that Jesus Christ is the Savior of the world. It is only through
His gospel that we can find eternal happiness and Joy.
I encourage everyone to pray to know how you personally can help with
this wonderful work of Salvation. I love this gospel so much. :) I
hope you all have a wonderful week! Love always,

Sister Hubbard xoxo

Week 32 Toyko mission

Sister Hubbard and Sister Alder her companion

Elder Scott and elder Ries At the cave

 Top of the mountain view

Hundred year old shoe we found on the beach, lol.

賽の河原 (sainokawara). The translation of the word means "children's Limbo." It is this big cave near the ocean with hundreds and thousands of little statues of children. It is a place dedicated to children who have died prematurely or while they were young. The belief about the area is that the children's spirits reside there and so families and people in the surrounding area go there to visit them and can feel of their presence.

Last, but certainly not least! Haha this is a toki bird. Sado is famous
for them. This is of course a stuffed one, but there are real ones on
Sado too. ;)

Sister Alder and Elders

Dear family,

Today I went on an adventure! We travelled to the far tip top of the island today for p-day to go and see some more of the historical sites in Sado. It was so far! I'm glad we went though. We got up really early and rode our bikes to Ryotsu to catch a bus at 7:30am. The bike ride to Ryotsu from our house is about a 12km bike ride, and so we had to leave the house early, and so I am pretty exhausted from today, but it has all been worth it. :) I've seen some really cool things today and learned lots more about the Japanese Culture and beliefs while seeing all of the sites. Sado's history is amazing! It still continues to blow my mind.
We went and saw a really special spot here on the island. It is called 賽の河原 (sainokawara). It was a neat experience for me to see all of that and to visit some of the other neat places near by. On the way there, we road the bus along the coastline. I saw Dolphins jumping in the ocean for the first time! That was really neat for me to experience. The fall nature colors are so beautiful here on the Island right now. We hiked for close to 10km to go and see all of the sites. Most of the hiking was done on along the coast line, and so we got to see the beautiful ocean waves and the beach scenery. It was so breathtaking. I always feel so close to God when being in nature. There is a special peace that comes from enjoying the small things in nature, just as much as the big things. I found a small handful of some of the most beautiful shells from the beach. I will have to send some home for Christmas. :) I have decided that Sado is one of the most beautiful places I have ever seen in my life. It's absolutely stunning. While I was outside, looking at all of the wonderful things around me, the primary song "My Heavenly Father loves me," came into my mind.

Whenever I hear the song of a bird
Or look at the blue, blue sky,
Whenever I feel the rain on my face
Or the wind as it rushes by,
Whenever I touch a velvet rose
Or walk by our lilac tree,
I’m glad that I live in this beautiful world
Heav’nly Father created for me.
God created such a beautiful world for us. I'm so grateful for all of the beautiful things He has created for us. Lately, I've really tried to help people understand that this earth and its beauty is a sign that there is a God and a supreme creator. There is no way that all of the beautiful things in nature evolved overtime from smaller compounds; they were organized and pieced together by our Heavenly Father for us because of love. At this time of the season, when talking with people in different places, I love to share Alma 30:44 with them. I've found that it is a great way to give people a Book of Mormon and talk about the nature of God.

"The scriptures are laid before thee, yea, and all things denote there is a God; yea, even the earth, and all things that are upon the face of it, yea, and its motion, yea, and also all the planets which move in their regular form do witness that there is a Supreme Creator."

Anyway, just some things I've been thinking about lately. :) We are so blessed and so loved.

Today, after asking for a few hours, we got really hungry. I had packed a whole bunch of snack because I wasn't quite sure what to expect. I'm glad I did, because we got out to this area and there was only some small houses close by. There were no stores, no vending machines, and after looking for a little while, accepted the fact that we might just be eating snacks for the next couple of hours, haha. As we came out from the cave and hiked another kilometer or so, we came out to a small area where there were a couple houses. We saw an older couple working together in their garden. When they saw us, they dropped what they were doing and came down from the hill to talk to us. At first, we didn't notice them, but then we saw them coming towards us. We were able to talk to them and explain why we were there. They said that it was so rare for them to see foreigners in that area. They said that they were surprised when they saw us, and they were even ore surprised when they learned that we could speak Japanese. As we talked with them, they asked us if we had food with us and if we had eaten anything. Now, as missionaries, we aren't supposed to lie, but we said that we had already eaten (snacks), haha. The woman somehow knew that we were really hungry and insisted that we wait and talk with her husband while she made us onigiri (rice balls). Before we could say anything, she had returned into the house...Japanese people are so giving. It doesn't matter if you are a stranger or a friend, they will give you all they have if you let them. I love them so much. While she was inside making the rice balls, we were able to talk with her husband about the gospel and give him a Book of Mormon. We asked him if he knew our member friend who lived close by. He said that he did, and then he asked us if the member friend could explain more about the Book of Mormon when they met. It's was such a neat experience! I hope they can come to church with the Hamada's (our member friends). That would be so great!

A few nights ago, we had dinner with the Iwasaki's and it was so amazing! Iwasaki Kyoudai is our branch president. Iwasaki Shimai made us a delicious dinner and we ate takoyaki and a really yummy seafood soup that we put overtop of raw ramen noodles-so good! She is so good at making things. A while back, last transfer, she told sister Horito that she would make her a skirt, and then she told me she was going to make me one too. She is so sweet, kind, and one of the most considerate people I have ever met. After dinner, she brought out the skirt she was making for me and she had me try it on to see if it was fitting right. It is one of the most beautiful skirts I have ever seen! She is so talented at sewing! Everything she touches becomes more beautiful and the way she speaks and shows love to others is so special. She is such an angel to everyone. I want to be more like her. Sister Alder thought it would be a good idea to Mogi how to give Book of Mormon's away to friends. I went first and the Iwasaki's played random people on the street. It was really awesome. Soon after, Alder shimai did it too. We then encouraged them to try while we pretended to be the people they wanted us to be. They both stopped for a minute to think about who they each wanted us to be. Iwaksaki Kaichou wanted one of us to be his boss because he had been feeling like he should give a book of Mormon to him for a while now. That was really neat. I think that as he practiced, he really felt the spirit confirm to him that his boss was the person he needed to give it to.
The spirit was felt really strongly as we practiced with them and bore testimony to each other. Watching them practice how they might talk to their friends really helped me to realize what an influence love can be when talking to people about the gospel. They are so amazing. :) I'm so grateful for the opportunity I have to know them.

Well, that's probably all I can share for this week, but I just want to say that I am so grateful to be a missionary. I love it so much and everyday brings on a new adventure. The things that happen everyday are a witness to me that God loves the people here so much. I feel that so strongly, and just as he loves the people here in Japan, I know He loves each one of you and is watching over you. This church is true.
I hope you all have a wonderful week!
Love always,

Sister Hubbard xoxo
